Cholera Prevention: Safe Water and Hygiene Guidelines
Clinical Overview & Pathophysiology
Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The disease can cause severe, watery diarrhea leading to rapid, life-threatening dehydration within hours if left untreated. Securing clean drinking water, proper sanitation, and food hygiene are the cornerstones of cholera prevention.
Key Clinical Facts & Indicators
- Rice-Water Stools: Large volumes of watery diarrhea resembling cloudy rice water, with a fishy odor.
- Leg Cramps: Painful muscle cramps in the legs caused by rapid loss of calcium, potassium, and sodium.
- Hypovolemic Shock: Rapid drop in blood pressure, fast heart rate, cold skin, and severe thirst due to fluid loss.
- extreme dehydration: Sunken cheeks, dry mouth, skin turgor loss (skin stays tented when pinched).
Lifestyle & Nutritional Guidelines
Drink only boiled or filtered drinking water. Wash hands with soap thoroughly before cooking or eating. Eat thoroughly cooked hot meals. Avoid street food and raw seafood. Use ORS immediately at the onset of watery diarrhea and seek emergency medical care.
